This position is a Full-Time temporary position not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Position may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement may be eligible for rehire in subsequent service years provided the employee does not exceed 1039 hours of work in their service year. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Thomas Edison National Historical Park is June - December, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: June

Responsibilities

Duties: As museum technician at Thomas Edison National Historical Park, you will perform a variety of technician duties in the areas of cataloging objects, upgrading storage, curatorial recordkeeping, research, historic housekeeping, and preservation. Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., boxes and collection items up to 50 pounds) must be lifted or moved on a frequent basis. Work Environment: Most of the work is performed in a museum environment of exhibit and storage areas, workrooms, laboratories, and offices. Area Information: For more than forty years, the laboratory created by Thomas Alva Edison in West Orange, New Jersey, had enormous impact on the lives of millions of people worldwide. Out of the West Orange laboratories came the motion picture camera, vastly improved phonographs, sound recordings, silent and sound movies and the nickel-iron alkaline electric storage battery. Thomas Edison National Historical Park provides a unique opportunity to interpret and experience important aspects of America's industrial, social and economic past, and to learn from the legacy of the world's best known inventor.

  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement 05/23/2018. Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors. QUALIFICATIONS: To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below. GS-05: To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below:

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the federal service. Experience includes but is not limited to: knowledge of curatorial principles of cataloging and processing, preservation and conservation, inventorying, housing and exhibit practices; Preserving, cleaning, and maintaining museum artifacts; using a museum cataloging database to catalog and process museum artifacts; preparing and dismantling museum exhibits; and performing artifact research and preparing reports and findings. EXPERIENCE MUST BE DOCUMENTED IN YOUR RESUME OR

  • Possess 4 years of education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in art, history, museum studies, or a related field that clearly provides the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful performance of the job. (You must submit your unofficial transcripts). OR

  • Possess a combination of the specialized experience and education as described above. For example, 6 months of specialized experience equals 50% of the specialized experience; and 3 years of education above the high school level (that included the required course work) equals 50% of the education. (You must submit your unofficial transcripts).

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institutionwith your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
